Marvel Should Get More Oscar Nominations

The most recent Oscar nomination Marvel Studios received was back in 2018 for Black Panther. In December of 2021, Marvel released Spider-Man: No Way Home, where all three generations of Spider-Men come together. This iconic plot should get at least a couple of nominations. One of those nominations should be for Best Picture, as it evaluates the whole movie process such as the acting, directing, writing, etc.

Why don’t Marvel movies get Oscar nominations often? Marvel has always done a spectacular job with their movies. A lot of thought is put into their movies, and its details prove so.  But unfortunately, very few science fiction films have been nominated through the years because the Oscars seem to focus more on funny and dramatic films. Superhero movies are a part of American culture, and the Oscars should be more inclusive of the scope of American culture.

For the past couple of years, the Oscars have nominated considerably boring films. There was a small number of good movies, but it was only a handful. They claim they want to get younger audiences engaged in the Oscar experience, but they don’t nominate movies that cater to youth or are generally watched by youth. Nominating Spider-Man: No Way Home or any of the Marvel movies from the past year would definitely get the Oscars more attention from young people.

Marvel is notorious for getting great actors to play the roles of their superheroes. It’s the main reason why Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr, Chris Hemsworth, and Scarlet Johansson are so popular and famous. Their performances are comedic yet so powerful at the same time; they deserve Oscar nominations at the least. The acting alone is great but it wouldn’t be there without the guidance of the writing. Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus have been writing most of these movies starting with Captain America: The First Avenger in 2011.

“We’re all incredibly proud of the film. It would obviously be a huge honor if it was nominated for an Oscar, but I think that’s not how we like to validate ourselves. We like to validate ourselves with the love we receive from the general public and so far that has been through the roof. So, for me with this film and this character, I’ve already achieved everything I would like to, you know. You see these fan reactions and people seeing Andrew (Garfield) coming through that portal and I’ve never seen anything like that in the theater before,” said Tom Holland, the actor who plays Marvel’s current Spider-Man,  in an interview for his upcoming movie Uncharted (FOX 5 Washington DC). As happy as he may be with the response to the film, one can’t help but think Holland would be even happier with a nomination.
